What weddings cost these days
We've been in business for 14 years and have provided wedding and event services for hundreds of clients. During that time we have served many couples and individual event hosts that were not prepared for the cost of the popular a trending floral and decor that they envisioned for their event. Many of them established budgets for their events prior to exploring the costs for the items that they needed and wanted most. In this blog post I will focus on the costs associated with obtaining the wedding flowers and decor that you find on Pinterest and Instagram of popular wedding florists and designers.
According to weddingstats.org, in 2019, the average cost of a U.S. wedding was between $29K-$31K (honeymoon not included). While this number varies by region, season, day of the week and style, it accurately portrays what most planning couples are currently spending for their big day. There are many other factors that contribute to this total that couples often don't consider. Guest count is one of them. It is recommended that 50% of the budget be allocated to venue and food alone. If you are a couple that desires a themed event or elaborate decor, that doesn't leave very much for the winter wonderland or romantic enchanted forest vibe that you have always dreamed of for your big day. When couples value the experience that a well decorated event can provide; floral and decor can sometimes take on a life of its own . I have had many couples to refer to their floral and decor budget as "the other budget" once they realize the cost to obtain their version of the Instagram and Pinterest photos on their vision board for their dream wedding .
If you are one of those couples, I am hoping that you will find the information in this blog useful.
For today's most popular and elaborated designs it is suggested that you allow 15-20% of your total budget for flowers and another 10-15% for decor (linens, rentals, draping, etc). Many of the lush elaborate floral designs and installations that you may find on Pinterest will require a larger percentage of your budget.
Floral vs. Decor
First of all, flowers can be considered decor, but not all decor is floral. With that being said , you may find that wedding florists in your area offer both floral and decor items. Aside from the flowers and vases, many event florist and event designers offer decor such as, aritifitial hedge walls, chargers, decorative candle holders, custom menus and signage, decorative linens and many other items. Where as many decor rentals companies will also offer the same items ...but not flowers. Items such as lighting and dance floors can be found at specialty event decor companies.
Florists that specialize in event design are often able to provide a couple with floral as well as specilaty decor and work their preferred vendors to deliver a cohesive design for your floral and decor.
So what does this look like for the average wedding budget ($29- $31k) if you allocate a minimum of 15% to flowers and 10% to decor ?
Total wedding budget (Does not take into account guest count):
Wedding Flowers ($4,300) + Decor ($2,900) = $ 7,250
Wedding Flowers ($4,650) + Decor ($3,100)= $7,750
